Jean de Dieu Ngirabega, MD, PhD, MPH
Dr. Ngirabega is the Deputy Director of the East African Health Research Commission. Prior to this, he served as the Head of the Institute of HIV/AIDS Diseases Prevention and Control at the Rwanda Biomedical Center. In this role, Dr. Ngirabega provided vision and coordinated activities aimed at the Rwandan National response to HIV/AIDS and other diseases including Non Communicable Diseases. He previously held the role of Director General of Clinical Services in the Ministry of Health of Rwanda for two years, coordinating a variety of units that included quality care improvement, medical education and research, nursing practice and education, pharmacy and emergency care. Prior to these appointments, he worked as the Medical Director of Ruli District Hospital in Northern Rwanda for 14 years. He trained in Medicine and in Public Health at the National University of Rwanda, and studies Epidemiology and Biostatistics applied to Medicine and Public Health at the Free University of Brussels. Dr. Ngirabega is dedicated to creating systems that improve the health of his community. He is particularly interested in addressing issues of malnutrition in children. He has conducted research to evaluate innovative approaches to better identify children who are suffering from malnutrition, and later implemented a community-based growth monitoring program from information obtained through this research. He has worked in the public health area in Rwanda for the last 28 years, designing, implementing and coordinating public health programs, and continues to serve as a visiting Lecturer at the School of Public Health, National University of Rwanda.
