Caring for Those Who Care: Building a More Resilient Healthcare Workforce in Rwanda
Caring for Those Who Care: Building a More Resilient Healthcare Workforce in Rwanda
Every day, healthcare workers across Rwanda dedicate themselves to caring for their communities, often while facing heavy workloads, limited resources, and emotional exhaustion. With burnout affecting up to 70% of healthcare workers in some Sub-Saharan African settings, supporting those who deliver care is essential to building stronger health systems.
At TIP Global Health, we believe that hope and resilience are fundamental to healthier healthcare workers and stronger communities. This belief inspired our Resilience Initiative, which combines culturally adapted digital messages, mentorship, and peer learning to help healthcare workers manage stress, practice self-care, and strengthen their connections with others.
Small Steps, Promising Results
Our nine-month pilot with 16 frontline healthcare workers at Bumbogo and Ntarama Health Centers demonstrated encouraging early results:
- 11% increase in resilience-related healthy behaviors.
- Over 90% of participants found the messages easy to access and integrate into their routines.
- Healthcare workers reported healthier coping strategies, greater support, and improvements in teamwork and communication.
These findings reinforced a powerful lesson: small, consistent actions, supported by human connection, can help healthcare workers navigate everyday challenges.
Building Toward Lasting Impact
Building on these results, TIP Global Health plans to expand the initiative to approximately 100 healthcare workers serving an estimated 385,000 people across Rwanda.
The next phase will focus on validating a standardized resilience curriculum, strengthening digital tools, and generating evidence to support long-term sustainability and integration into Rwanda’s health system.
Our vision goes beyond helping individual healthcare workers manage stress. We aim to make resilience and well-being an integral part of healthcare delivery, creating a workforce that feels supported, connected, and equipped to thrive.
Because caring for those who care for others is fundamental to building stronger health systems and healthier communitie!
